Chapter Five

Tess and Henry arrived in Miami, relieved to escape the cold Boston weather. Having tied up their business in Boston, they planned on starting a life in Miami. After brunch with Sully, however, they would be travelling north again. He presented them with an opportunity too good to pass up.

“I booked a room at the airport hotel so we can go over our new identities.”

“I can always count on you to cover the details. After I lay down roots here in Miami, we can go up to Boston and take care of Sully. That sucker played right into our hands. I’d say I’m on a lucky streak.”

“After Sully and Miami, I think we should call it quits. The islands are calling our name, Tess. Or should I call you Alexis?” Henry chuckled. “There’s a salon here in the airport. We’ll transform you.”

“Good plan. I’m sick of this mousey blonde look, and I want some flash this time.”

Tess planned to insert herself into the life of a recently widowed billionaire. He would be grief-stricken after the death of his wife. An unsteady man was her favorite mark. She and Henry, who would be her brother in Miami, had gotten good at scheming weak men.

“Here we go sweetie. Alexis Potter is born. After we get your hair done and pop in the contacts, we’ll take photos for your IDs.”

Tess sat in the salon chair and gave the stylist instructions. It was her favorite part of creating a new identity.

“What are we doing today?” Shasta, the stylist ran her fingers through Tess’s blonde locks.

“I’m new to town, and I want a new look. I want it dark auburn and super short.”

“A bit drastic, isn’t it ma’am? I suggest you do your new look in stages.”

“I’m the customer. If you don’t do what I want now, I’ll go elsewhere,” Tess barked.

Tess closed her eyes and smiled as the last vestiges of Tess fell to the ground. Henry watched from nearby as dollar signs danced in his head.
